About Work
The ideas and concepts that are represented in my work are fueled by experiences and observations in my daily life. I am most inspired by the simplest of these details and moments. It is this awareness that has always caused my work to be created abstractly. My imagery and mark making obscure the obvious and give the work a spiritual presence. My focus has always been in the various types of printing. I began with screen printing, which led to the study of traditional printmaking methods, such as etching, monotype, and lithography. As the work evolved, I realized the endless possibilities for exploration in these mediums. The simple act of making a mark on a surface became central to my work. The idea that the lines and scratches I created became permanent really interested me. I began to search for different ways to create lines, shapes, and textures on a surface. In recent works, I have continued on with some elements of printmaking, only I have deleted the second half of the process-the reproduction of the image. This has allowed me to work in a much larger format which printmaking had limited. I began these pieces by scratching on large sheets of synthetic surfaces, which I then washed with ink and paint to bring out the lines. I created depth by removing the pigment in certain parts. I found that by adhering different materials to the surface, I could bring more shape and depth to the image. I continued to add and subtract thin layers until I felt comfortable enough to walk away from the piece. Much of the time I will carry a subject matter into three or four pieces until it is resolved, which will often give me more than one piece with the same title. I do not consider any of my works finished; they are all studies of something that will take a lifetime to learn.

About the Artist
Cuban born artist Julio Garcia's has chosen printmaking as the vehicle for his artistic conversation. Through his experimentation, he has reached a level of understanding of the printmaking method that has led him to eliminate the reproduction part of the process. Each of his pieces is its own entity, and unlike traditional printmaking, they will retain this quality. Julio began his studies as along side Argentinean artist Antonieta Dorta, where he practiced traditional oil painting. Garcia later received a BFA in painting from The Savannah College of Art and Design in 1994. As a printmaker Julio has studied along side master printmaker Mitchell Bryant, where he gained a vast experience in large-format screen printing. In 1999 Garcia received a contribution from NAZDAR International for his exploration of the company's screen-printing chemicals. In 2000 he was awarded a Printmaking Residency to the Vermont Studio Center. In 2002 he was awarded a Grant from the YUPO Corporation, which gave him access to the company's huge selection of synthetic papers. In 2004 he took part in the SoHo Chelsea International Artist Exhibition in New York City. In 2005 Garcia was selected for publication in New American Paintings. In 2007 his work was added to the Telfair Museum of Modern Arts permanent collection. Hes work is also in numerous private and corporate collections through out the world including the Savannah College of art and Designs permanent collection. Garcia was selected as one of the Top Movers and Shakers in the Georgia Art scene by the Museum of Contemporary art in Atlanta Ga. in 2008. That same year he was invited by the University of Florida as a visiting artist. During his time there he produced and published a series of mixed media prints through the Alagarto Press. Julio Garcia lives and works in Savannah Ga.
