Like cinematic scenes from some post-industry otherworld, toggling between backdrops of metropolis and flatlands, Lorie Corbus' mixed media paintings are inhabited by deserted buildings, boxcar children, and most recently, slingshot warriors with a fashion sense.  Using pencil, marker, ink, oil paint, marble dust, and collage, the artist juxtaposes disparate images to create compositions “reflecting an almost melancholy hopefulness.” Using her own photographs, as well as found imagery, the artist removes focal points from their original context, and places them in unlikely environments.

Corbus was chosen as one of Georgia’s Young Movers and Shakers of 2006 by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Atlanta, Ga. She has performed with One Railroad Circus, an all women’s performance troupe based out of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and toured and recorded as an accordionist with the alt-country band, The Dolly Ranchers. Corbus lives and works in Savannah, Georgia where she graduated summa cum laude from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
