People fill spaces with meaning and relationships. All the physical things that make up our life have a mythic or symbolic existence in our unconscious mind. So the paintings are about how the world resides within us; what's left with us.

In paint I can show my sense that things are not solid as they seem—that there is a slippery, mysterious nature to reality. Also the can paint show how different perspectives coexist, within individuals or between them, which can be contradictory, harmonious and/or oblivious to one another.

Like Fairfield Porter, I am fascinated in my immediate surroundings and family life. He observes those closest to them with a great deal of honesty, accuracy, and nuance. The economical and exacting portraits of Alice Neal also inspire me with all their humanity. I also admire Jane Freilicher as she describes the infinite view from her window so delicately in paint. Like these painters, I feel no subject is too small or ordinary when given full attention.

Most directly I feel connected to Pierre Bonnard who’s sensual and tender way of painting did not undermine his complex and penetrating look into his life. His very personal sense of the sublime always commingles with his boredom, angst, and sadness. Like Bonnard, I synthesize my world while painting. There is a sense with all these painters that they are letting the paint guide them, and in following learned what they needed to discover.

My recent paintings are about my daughter and my changed world with her. Like many others, I feel nothing has called on as much of me as becoming a mother. In early motherhood we are as vulnerable as a child again. Things are raw and precious. Also, the tougher more animalistic parts of being alive come to the surface. We are in touch with the driving forces and cycles of life, and how we are mostly a witness in this process.
