Stephanie Dotson, honing
her methodology over the past several years of intermedia study
(in graphic design, printmaking and ceramics) at The University
of Georgia in Athens, GA, The Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas
City, MO, and Brighton University in Brighton, England, as well
as through residencies in Havana, Cuba, at the Ox-bow school of
Art in Chicago, IL, and with the prestigious 2004 Southern Graphics
Council Graduate Fellowship Award, has arrived at an exciting and
distinctly individual style and visual presence. Dotson layers the
slick edges of digital media design with a sweetly-awkward illustrative
style, and a mad arsenal of working materials and techniques, to
create works which reconcile the tactile with the strictly imagistic,
the grandiose with the delicate and the dynamic with the ornamental.
Her multilayered, tactile and colorful assemblages combine drawing,
painting, printmaking, digital design and paper cutouts on surfaces
as varied as paper, vellum, felt, fabric and glazed ceramic.
Stephanie Dotson has exhibited nationally at the International
Print Center of New York, the Creative Alliance of in Baltimore,
MD, The Green Door Gallery in Kansas City, MO, and The Fay Gold
Gallery in Atlanta; she had a solo exhibition at the London Taxi
Gallery in Athens, GA, in 2004. She is the winner of numerous of
awards and fellowships for innovative work in printmaking and intermedia
art. Her work was seen most recently in Atlanta as part of the 2005
Atlanta Biennial, curated by Helena Reckitt, at the Atlanta Contemporary
Art Center.
