View on a Wall
I make paintings that are filled with complications. Many individual elements coalesce into a complete image, but one in which the edges and intersections remain obvious. Perhaps a result of my childhood in Illinois I am most comfortable with straight lines and rows of forms. The process is both intuitive and intentional, a call and response. I like to know how things fit together; I like complexity. I think William Occam was wrong; the simplest answer is not always the best. Complexities, fullness, infinitude, vastness, are the things that answer the big question for me. The desire for the simplifying assumption and the faith that we have the one true answer is futile. The challenge is to remain awestruck. -Scott Eakin
